Single split
One outdoor unit serves one indoor unit. Simple, efficient and each room is independent.
Multi split
One outdoor unit serves two to five indoor units. Fewer units on the outside wall, but if the outdoor unit fails every room is affected.
Which is best?
For one or two rooms on different sides of the house, two single splits can be cheaper. For three or more rooms, multi-split is often neater.
